「寝たり起きたり」「出たり入ったり」は英語でどういう？

「寝たり起きたり」は英語でどういうのでしょう？前回の記事「入退院を繰り返す」を英語で表現するを読まれた方は察しが付いているかと思いますが、in and out of というプレーズを使います。また、「（会社や家）を出たり入ったり」もご紹介します。

In and out of bed

「寝たり起きたり」の状態は

• 体調が悪くて起きていられない
• 休みなのでダラダラと過ごしている
• トイレのために何度か目を覚ます

場合がありますが、すべて be 動詞 + in and out of bed (床についたり起きたり）と表現できます。

現在完了形 + in and out of bed

寝たり起きたりの状態が続いている場合、組み合わせる be 動詞は現在完了形 （has/have been) を使います。

My mom isn't feeling well and she's been in and out of bed all weekend.

母は体調を崩していて、週末はずっと寝たり起きたりでした。

I have been in and out of bed all morning. It's my day off and I feel very lazy.

朝はずっと寝たり起きたりしていた。休みだし、やる気がない。

Jake didn't get a good night's sleep. He's been in and out of bed to go to the bathroom.

ジェイクはぐっすりと眠れなかったんだって。トイレに行くために寝たり起きたりだったらしい。

過去完了形 + in and out of bed

In and out of bed の状況が完了している場合は過去完了形と in and out of bed を組み合わせます。

A. Were you able to go to the concert?

B. No, I was terribly hungover and had been in and out of bed all day.  .

A. コンサートへ行くことはできた？

B. いいや、ひどい二日酔いだったので、一日中寝たり起きたりだった。

家、職場

友人の家、取引先の会社を訪問する前に連絡を入れると、「今日は ～ を出たり入ったりです」という返事が来る場合があります。こちらも in and out of the ～ と組み合わせます。

職場の場合

日本語では「会社を出たり入ったりです」と返事をしますが、英語では普段働いている具体的な部所を使って表現します。会社であれば、office （事務所）という具合に。

B. すみません。今日は（修理）工場を出たり入ったりです。明日でもよろしいでしょうか？

Sorry, I'll be in and out of the classroom today. Can you leave the package at the reception desk?

「家を出たり入ったり」と英語で言う場合は住まいの種類によって表現が変わってきます。
