「無くなりそう」「切れそう」と英語で表現する

今回は「～が切れそう」という意味の英語表現をご紹介します。食料品、お金、燃料、モチベーションなど、いろいろなものに対して使うことができます。

Running low on

Run low on はガソリンのゲージで言えば、まだ E（empty、カラ） には達していないけど、そろそろ心配なときに使います。ガソリンだけではなく、徐々に減っていくものなら何にでも使うことができます。

主語が代名詞の場合、目的語が共有のものであれば、複数形の we や they、そうでないものは I, he, she を使います。

>A. Can I borrow your car?
B. Sure, but I'm running low on gas.
A. 車を借りてもいい？
B. いいけど、ガソリンが切れそうなんだよね。

The team is running low on motivation.
チームのモチベーションが落ちてきている。

We are running low on sugar and tea.

Running out of

Run out of は現在進行形で表現したときのみ、「切れそう」という意味になります。Run out of 自体は「～を使い果たす」「～を切らす」という意味です。

We are running out of funds. Please help us in any way you can.

私たちの活動資金が底を付きそうです。どんな形でもいいので、どうぞご協力ください。

A. We're running out of milk.

B. I'll get some on the way home.

A. 牛乳が切れそうだなぁ。

B. 帰りに買ってくるよ。

Run out of patience は日本語の「堪忍袋の緒が切れる」と同じような意味。「しびれを切らす」「我慢の限界に達している」といいたいときに最適です。

Running out of と running low on の違いはあるのでしょうか？Sugar, money, cigarettes, patience など12のキーワードをつけて両方の表現を検索してみましたが、双方が interchangeable だという結論に達しました。

厳密に言うと、running out of の方が切羽詰まっている印象を与えます。

running low on coffee > running out of coffee > out of coffee

でもそれほど気にしなくても大丈夫。どちらでも伝わります。

ただ大切なのは、表現の最後の前置詞を間違えないこと。
