Late to the game という新しいイディオム

I'm late to the party.

Late to the game という意味のイディオムをご紹介します。日常会話や SNSですぐに使いたくなる表現です。Late in the game とは意味が違います。

late to the game

Late to the game は「試合に遅れた」という意味の表現ですが、日常会話や SNS では別の意味で使われています。

まずはイディオムではない使い方を見てみましょう。選手であっても観客であっても、試合に遅れると試合の流れは分かりません。

Late to the game は「会話に加わるのに遅れたので、話の流れがよく理解していない」という意味で日常会話でも、SNS でもよく使われます。「話題に乗り遅れた」という意味でも使われます。

A. Sam and Kei are getting married.

A. やっぱりそうだった！彼らはまさに天が結びつけたカップルだ。

この記事を書くためにネット上の英和辞書で late to the game を調べたら、どこにも掲載されていなかったので、英字辞書を調べても定義はでてきませんでした。その代わりに Google の検索結果でヒットしたのは、late in the game でした。この表現は普通「試合の終盤」という意味で使われ、もう手の施しようがない状況を表します。

It is late in the game and the entire team is tired and discouraged. A couple of players are injured.

試合も終盤となり、チーム全体が疲れて意気消沈している。数人の選手が負傷している。

ただし、後に but が続くと、良いことが起きたことを示唆します。

It was late in the game but Megumi got her second wind and hit a home run.

試合終盤だったが、めぐみは元気を取り戻し、ホームランを打った。

Idiom の late in the game は色々なシーンで「手遅れ」な状況な状態や「終盤」を表現します。
