「（車から）降ろす」「届ける」という意味の句動詞 ～ drop off

I dropped my son off at school.

これまでこのブログでは移動手段という項目で「迎える」「送る」「車で行く」などの英語表現をご紹介しましたが、今回のテーマは「降ろす」という意味の句動詞です。この句動詞は「届ける」「返却する」というときにも使えます。

Drop ～ off

Drop off はいろいろな意味を持つ句動詞ですが、今回は

• ～を降ろす
• ～を届ける

という意味の表現をご紹介します。

（車）から降ろす

車やバスから人を降ろすというときには：

drop + 人 + off (+ at + 場所）

A. Do you need a ride to school?
B. Yes, but could you drop me off at the gym? I have morning practice.
A. 学校まで送ってあげようか？
B. うん、でも体育館（の前）で降ろしてもらえる？朝練があるから。

She dropped me off at the bus stop and I had to walk half an hour to the theater.
彼女が僕をバス停で降ろしたので、劇場まで30分歩かなければならなかった。

Drop off の対義語は pick up （迎える）です。

The tour bus will pick us up at 9:00 and drop us off at the hotel around 4:30.
ツアーバスは私たちを9時に迎えにきて、4:30頃にホテルで降ろしてくれます（=連れて行ってくれます）。

～ を届ける

Drop off には「～ を届ける」という意味もありますが、宅配業者や郵便配達員の業務ではなく、一般の人が荷物や書類などを届けるという意味で使われます。

I'll drop off this chicken soup at Serina's place. She's been sick with the flu.
このチキンスープをセリナの家まで届けてくる。ずっとインフルエンザで休んでいるんだって。

If you're going to the first floor, could you drop off these envelopes at the mail room?
もし一階まで行くのなら、これらの封筒を郵便室へ持って行ってもらえないかな？

次の例文では図書館の「返却口に入れた」という意味になります。CDやDVDのレンタルの返却口にも使えます。

He dropped off some books at the library before going to work.
仕事へ行く前に、彼は本を図書館で返却した。

ちなみに返却口は return chute といいます。

A. Isn't the library closed in the morning?
B. He dropped them into the book return chute.
A. 図書館は朝はしまっていなかったっけ？
B. 本を返却口に入れたんだよ。
