新元号について ～ Japan's new era name

今回は新元号「令和」に関する英語表がテーマです。現英語のメディアの記事の抜粋と、SNS やメールで使えるシンプルな表現をご紹介します。

ニュースメディアでの表現

ネットで見つけた新元号「令和」に関する表現を私なりに訳してみました。「外国人目線」な表現になっています。

CNN の記事には「新しい天皇陛下の治世は『礼和』と知られるだろう」と書いてありましたが、日本語では不自然に聞こえるので次のように訳しました。

The reign of the next Japanese emperor will be known as the "Reiwa" era, the Japanese government announced Monday, ahead of the coronation of Crown Prince Naruhito next month. [CNN]
次の日本の天皇の治世は「令和」の時代と名付けられた。日本政府は来月に皇太子徳仁親王が天皇に即位される日に先立ち、月曜日に発表した。

NPR の記事に出てきた name of ... imperial era (= imperial era name) は「元号」にとても近い表現だと思います。

Japan has revealed the name of its next imperial era to be "Reiwa," set to begin May 1 as Crown Prince Naruhito is expected to take the throne. [NPR]

日本政府は5月1日の成仁親王の即位にともない新しい時代の名前が「令和」であることを明らかにした。

The Guardian の記事では「万葉集」を「マニョーシュ」と誤読しないように、Man'yoshu とアポストロフィで区切ってスペルしてあります。

The characters are taken from a stanza in a poem about plum blossoms that appears in Man’yoshu, the oldest existing collection of Japanese poetry, compiled sometime after 759. [The Guardian]
「令和」の文字は、759年以降に編まれた、日本最古の詩集である、万葉集に登場する梅の花の詩の序文から選ばれたものです。

カジュアルな表現

SNS などで使えるカジュアルな表現をご紹介します。「令和」は the era of Reiwa, the Reiwa era, Reiwa と表現することができます。

The era of Reiwa will begin as the current Crown Prince ascends to the Chrysanthemum Throne.
現在の皇太子さまのご即位とともに、令和の時代が始まります。

The Reiwa era begins on May 1, 2019.
令和は2019年５月１日にはじまります。

The characters 令和 comes a a poem about plum blossoms in an ancient Japanese poetry anthology called Man'yoshu.
令和の二文字は日本の古い詩集「万葉集」から選ばれました。

You will be our first graduate of the Reiwa era.
皆さんはわが校初の令和の卒業生になります。

Reiwa についてある程度説明した後は Reiwa のみで表現してもいいでしょう。

My nephew will be born in the end of May this year. He will be the first Reiwa baby of my extended family.
甥っ子が今年の５月の末に生まれます。親類の中では一番最初の令和生まれです。

My parents were born in Showa, I was born in Heisei and my baby will be born in Reiwa.
両親は昭和生まれ、私は平成、そして赤ちゃんは令和に生まれます。

I am going to propose on the first day of Reiwa.
令和の最初の日にプロポーズするぞ。

Reiwa は「令和の」という意味の形容詞として使うこともできます。

I hope Reiwa will become a prosperous and happy era.
令和が豊かで幸福な時代になりますように。

元号が変わることをお正月のあいさつのような表現を使うのもありかと思います。
