年賀状を英語で説明する ～ about Japanese New Year's cards

外国人の方に日本の「年賀状」について説明するため英語表現を集めました。

まず、「風習がある」という表現

まず、「～する風習があります」という表現をご紹介しましょう。

主語 + have + a custom of + ～ing (+目的語）

Japanese people have a custom of giving cash gifts to children on New Year's day.
日本（人）にはお正月に子供たちに現金のプレゼントをする風習があります。

「現金のプレゼント」という表現に少々抵抗があるかと思いますが、この後に「お年玉」という表現や、ポチ袋を説明すると分かりやすいでしょう。

It is customary for + 目的語 + to + 動詞の原形 (+目的語)

It is customary for Japanese people to send New Year's cards.

日本には年賀状を送るという習慣があります。

家族の伝統の話しをする時は、 custom でも tradition でもOKです。「ずっと続いている」ものは現在完了形で、比較的新しいものは現在形で表現します。

It is family tradition to + 動詞の原形 (+目的語)

It is our family tradition to donate blood at the end of the year.

年末に献血するのが我が家の習慣です。

「風習」ということばを全く使わず、現在形で表現しても十分通じます。現在形は繰り返される習慣を表現することに用いられます。　

On New Year's day, Japanese people visit shrines and temples to pray for health and good fortune.

日本人はお正月にお寺や神社にお参りをして、健康と幸福を祈ります。

Most や all のような限定詞は特に必要ありません。

年賀状の習慣

年賀状は封書ではなく、はがきであることを説明する必要があります。最初は postcard (はがき）と紹介して、その後は card （カード）と表現していいでしょう。

Japanese people send New Year's postcards at the end of the year.
日本人は年末に年賀状を送ります。

New Year's cards sent by December 25th will be delivered on January 1st.
25日までに送られた年賀状はお正月に届きます。

Japan Post begins accepting New Year's cards from December 15th.
日本郵政は12月15から年賀はがきを受け付けます。

To differentiate New Year's cards from regular cards, senders must write or print the kanji 年賀 under the postage stamp.
普通のはがきと区別するために、切手のしたに、「年賀」と印刷するか、記入しなければなりません。

年賀状の種類

Japan Post begins selling New Year's postcards in November.

日本郵政は11月に年賀状

Pre-printed New Year's cards which come with a lottery numbers are very popular.

抽選番号付の絵付き年賀はがきは人気です。

Drawings of the lottery postcards are held on January 15th and receivers of the card are eligible to win prices.

番号付はがきの年賀状の抽選は1月15日に行われます。

Blank New Year's postcards with lottery numbers are also available.

空白のお年玉年賀はがきもあります。

Regular post cards can be sent as New Year's cards as long at the kanji 年賀is written or printed under the postage stamp.

普通のはがきの切手の下に「年賀」という漢字を手書きか印刷すれば、年賀はがきとして使えます。

年賀状のデザイン

A typical New Year's card contains a pictures of the creature of the Chinese zodiac, a New Year's greeting and dated January 1st.
一般的な年賀はがきには干支の絵、新年のメッセージとともに、1月1日の日付が描かれています。

Some people send pre-printed cards sold by Japan Post while others design their own cards.
日本郵政の絵付き年賀はがきを出す人も、自分で年賀状をデザインする人もいます。

Some people write messages in Japanese calligraphy with ink and brush.
筆とインクで日本の書道の文字でメッセージを書く人もいます。
