「1個上の先輩です」を英語で表現する ～ Were you in the same grade?

One year ahead of me

「1個上の先輩でした」という意味の英語表現をご紹介します。同じ学校に通った人同士で会話で聞かれがちな「同級生だった？」に対しての返事です。

One year ahead of me

 「1個上の先輩です」「一年上の先輩です」は 英語で次のように表現します。

(he is) one year ahead of（me）

（彼は）（私より）一年先です

A. Weren't you in the same grade in high school?

B. No, he was one year ahead of me.

A. 高校のとき（彼と）同じ学年じゃなかった？

B. ううん、彼は私より 1 年先でした。

One year と a year は同じ意味にです。

Aiko was a year ahead of my sister Yui in college,

アイコは大学で妹のユイより一学年上でした。

一年以上の違いがある場合は years という具合に複数形を使います。

No, they were at least three years ahead of us.

いいえ、彼らは私たちより少なくとも 3 年先輩です。

One year behind me

「～年後輩」「～個下」は ～ year(s) behind と表現します。

I don't think I have ever met them. They were 3 years behind me in college.

私は彼らに会ったことはないと思います。彼らは大学時代に私の3年後輩でした。

同じ学年だった？

同じ学年だった？は Were you in the same grade? と表現します。「～ と」は as ～と言います。

A. Were you in the same grade as Yoshito?

B. No, he was one year ahead of me but we had computer class together.

A. ヨシトと同じ学年だっけ？

B. ううん、彼は私より 1 年上だったけど、パソコンの授業を一緒に受けていた。
