「厚着をする」という意味の句動詞

今回は「厚着をする」という意味の句動詞の layer up と bundle up の意味の違いと使い分け方をご紹介します。どちらも dress warmly の類似語です。

Bundle up は冬限定

Bundle up はどちらかというと冬限定で、老若男女に対して使うことができます。テレビやラジオの天気予報で、よく耳にする表現です。「出かけるために」に暖かくするというニュアンスがありますので、その部分は省きます。

Bundle up! It's chilly outside.
外は冷えてるので、暖かくして（出かけて）。
外は冷えているので、暖かくして（お出かけ）ください。

「暖かい服装をしている」というときは受動態にします。

be + bundled up

Make sure the kids are all bundled up.
お子様たちが十分温かい服装をしているかご確認ください。
子どもたちが暖かくしているか、見てきてくれない？

Layer up はまだオンラインの和英辞書には出ていませんが、2つの意味があります。

• おしゃれな重ね着
• 冬の厚着

Layer up は冬の始まりの一日の寒暖差がある場合に服を重ねたり、脱いだりしながら調節するイメージがあります。

Google で検索してみると bundle up と layer up のヒット数には大差はありません。意味や用途が若干違うので使い分けられているのでしょう。

最後の dress warmly （温かい服装をする）だけが著しくヒット数が少ないですが、死語だというわけではありません。Layer up や bundle up の方が会話で聞き取り安いと言う利点があります。
