問題を「解決する」という意味の句動詞 work out

今回は「話し合いや互いの努力で問題を解決する、計画を実現する」という意味の work out をご紹介します。人と人から、国と国の問題まで使える表現です。

Work out を辞書で調べると

英語の辞書を調べると、work out は

to devise, arrange, or achieve by resolving difficulties
困難を解決することにより考案、手配、達成する

とあります。

英和辞書にも、work out の定義の一つが「問題を解決する」とあります。

Work out は小学校の算数の問題を「解く」から、国同士が協議を続けて「解決策を見つける」ことまで、幅広い意味で使うことができます。

A. This algebra problem is tough.
B. Look at the back of the book for the answer.
A. No, I want to work it out on my own.
A. 数学の問題難しい。
B. 本の後ろに答えがあるよ。
A. ううん、自分で解きたいんだよね。

Work out our differences

Work out our differences は「互いの相違点を乗り越えて、解決する」という意味。

これは米国34代大統領ハリー・S・トルーマンのことばです。
