「伝える」以外の意味の tell

Tell という動詞には can や could と組み合わせると「わかる」「見分けられる」などの意味になります。日常会話でよく使われる表現なので、知っておくと便利でしょう。

わかる

Can tell は「わかる」という意味です。自分の五感、知識、直感だけを使っての結論を表現する時に使われます。過去形は could tell です。


「～だとわかる」は tell + that と表現します。

      He could tell right away that the smartphone he bought was secondhand.
      彼は買ったスマートフォンが中古品だとすぐにわかった。

      I can tell that the customer is very dissatisfied. Would you tell me what happened?
      お客様は満足されていないことが明らかです。何があったか話してもらえますか？

      A. There were a lot of Korean children at the park.
      B. How could you tell they were Korean?
      A. They were speaking Hangul.
      A. 公園に韓国人の子供がたくさんいたよ。
      B. なんで韓国人だとわかった？
      A. ハングル語を話してたから。

can + tell + why は「なぜ～かわかる」という意味です。

      I can tell why you like this coffee shop so much.
      なぜあなたがこのコーヒーショップが好きなのかわかる。

見分けられる

「～かどうか見分けられる？」のような疑問文は can + tell + if と表現します。

      Can you tell if this is a fake ID?
      これが偽の身分証明書か見分けられますか？

「見分けられない」という否定分は can't　+ tell　+　whether と表現します。選択肢がある場合はこちらを使います。

      I can't tell whether this is cornstarch or flour.
      これがコーンスターチなのか、小麦粉なのか見分けられません。

類似している物やそっくりな人を「区別する」は tell + 目的語 + apart

      Yes, I can tell my twins apart even if they are looking the other way.
      はい、私は(うちの)双子たちが向こうを向いていても区別することができます。

      A. This is the vintage Ultraman Seven figure and this is the brand-new retro Ultraman Seven figure.
      B. I can't tell them apart.
      A. こっちがビンテージのウルトラマンセブンのフィギュアで、こちらが新品のレトロ・ウルトラマンセブン。
      B. 違いが全くわからない。
