成功や、努力の成果を make it で表現しよう ～ I made it!

I made it!

今回は「成功する」「耐え抜く」などという意味で使える make it という句動詞を紹介します。The Free Dictionary の make it の3つの定義をご紹介します。

（逆境や不運を）耐えぬく

continue in existence after (an adversity, etc.)　（逆境などの）後も存続する、行きのびる

この表現は生死に関する話しから、それほど深刻ではないことに関しても使えます。Survive　や、動詞の last （持ちこたえる）の同意語です。

We are not sure that grandma will make it through the night.
祖母が今夜持つかどうかわかりません。

It's a miracle that the baby made it through the operation.
赤ちゃんが手術を耐えぬいたのは奇跡だ。

Congratulations.　You made it through college.
おめでとう。大学を（四年間）耐えぬいたね。

A. I need to go to the restroom.
B. We will get there in 5 minutes. Can you make it till then?
A.　トイレに行きたい。
B. 後5分で着くけど、それまで待てない？（トイレを我慢出来る？）

I'm so hungry. I can't make it till lunch.
お腹が空きすぎて、お昼間で待てない。

I can't make it till payday.
給料日まで持ちそうにない。

トップに登りつめる 

succeed in a big way; get to the top　成功する、トップに登りつめる,、頑張り抜く、勝ち進む

Make it は succeed （成功する） の同意語やであり、reach　（目標にたどり着く）という意味でも使えます。

I don't think I can make it in science.
理科系で成功する自信がない。（＝成功できると思えない。）

My brother made it big in Osaka.
兄は大阪で大成功した。（=ビッグになった。）

I finally made it to the top.
やっとトップに登りつめた。

To make it in this business, you need to brush up on your English.
この業界で成功するには、英語を上達させなければ。　

Not all musicians can make it to Carnegie Hall.
すべての音楽家がカーネギーホールへたどり着くわけではない。

I am so proud that my sons made it to the top of Mount Fuji.
息子たちが富士山登頂に成功したことを誇りに思っています。（＝富士山の頂上にたどり着いた事）

試験や面接を合格する  

go successfully through a test or a selection process テストや選択プロセス（オーディション、面接等）を合格する

試験、オーディション、面接のようなプロセスを合格するという意味でも make it を使えますが、it の変わりに具体的な名詞で表現することもあります。　I made it! だけなら、日本語の「やったぁ！」と訳すことができます。

I made it！　I got my acceptance letter from college.
やったぁ！大学の合格通知が届いた。

Congratulations!　You made it!
採用されたんだね！おめでとう。

Our team made the first round.
私たちのチームは一回戦を突破した。

He made the audition for the dance team.
彼はダンスチームのオーディションに合格した。

～に間に合う

to reach in time　間に合う、（確実に）参加する、（時間通りに）到着する

こちらは FreeDictionary に出来きませんが一般的によく使われる口語です。「間に合う」「参加する」「（無事に）着く」など、事情を詳しく説明せずに表現することに使われます。

I don't think I can make it to your party tonight.　
今夜の君のパーティーに行けそうにない。

Did you make it home safely last night?
昨日は無事に家に帰れた？

ヒット曲の中の make it

マドンナの Like a Virgin という曲はこんな歌詞で始まります。

I made it through the wilderness
Somehow I made it through
荒野の中を通り抜け
どうにか生き抜いた

Wilderness は「荒野」の他に、苦境、苦しみ、貧困などの比喩として使われます。最近ではコロナ渦が wilderness に例えられています。
