Come で始まる句動詞 (2) ～ Has he come around yet?

I knew the Lifeboat Service will come through.

今回は、Come で始まる句動詞の第二弾。Come through, come around, come up with など。

come through　

〔必要とするものを〕提供する, 手渡す

困っているときに必要なもの提供してくれたり、間に合わせてくると助かりますよね。そういった行為を come through で表現します。上の画像はイギリスの Burnham-on-Sea　Lifeboat のボランティアの方々です。遭難した時に「救助」を提供してくれます。

Come through の目的語はお金、協力、足りない物、影響力など、色々あります。場合によっては、主語の人物自体が目的語のこともあります。

      I knew the lifeboat service will come through for us.

      救命線サービスが必ず来てくれると思っていました。

      My team came through for us again.

      僕が応援しているチームがまたファンのためにやってくれました。

      My brother came through with the money for my rent.

      兄が私の家賃を工面してくれました。

come around　

a. 意識を回復する これは、以前取り上げた come to と同意語です。

      She was passed out but she came around in a few minutes.
      彼女は気を失っていましたが、すぐに意識を戻しました。

b. （人が）意見を変える、同調する　

こちらの定義は、「いずれは賛成していくれる」、「いつかは分かってくれる」など時が経てば同調してくれるという意味合いで使われます。

      He disagrees now but he'll come around.
      今は反対しているけど、やがて賛成してくれる。

      You are too young to understand but you will eventually come around.
      君は今は若くて理解できないが、いずれはわかるはずだ。

come up with

 (アイディアを）思いつく

アイディアが、「思いつく」、「思い浮かぶ」、「ひらめく」という意味で使う表現です。この句動詞の目的語には「ユニークな」、「斬新な」、「新しい」などのニュアンスがあります。

      How did you come up with a name like that?
      どうやってそんな名前が思いついたの？

      We haven't come up with a title for out song.
      曲のタイトルが思いつきません。

      We put our heads together and came up with a great idea.
      額を寄せ合ったら、良い案が浮かびました。

come forward 

名乗り出る

いい意味でも、悪い意味でも名乗り出なければならないことがあります。

      Please come forward if you have the winning raffle ticket.

      当たりのくじ引き券をお持ちの方は名乗り出てください

      The student who scrawled the racist graffiti came forward.

      人種差別的な落書きをした生徒が名乗り出ました。

      If any one of you took Timmy's sneakers, please come forward.
